Since we use no chemicals to treat our wooden lames, they must be maintained by occasionally soaking them in oil. We recommend using our fractionated coconut oil. The lames come pre-treated in our oil and seepage onto the paper wrap and envelope will occur!
1 Wooden Lame 46 x 6.35mm. 1 Astra Platinum coated double edge razor blade included; wrapped in paper. Please be careful when handling.
(Does not include a pouch)
We guarantee a 1 year warranty on this UFO lame. We also accept returns up to 14 days after products have been received.
The UFO Zero was my original concept for the circular bread lame, the very first UFO. I had 1950s sci-fi on the brain, some engineering ideas, and a lot of my mother's card games. It's a long story! Every circular lame you see today traces back to this shape, and the UFO Zero is still designed and made by us in our small Connecticut shop.
Its enclosed, ambidextrous body gives you the fine, decorative control Wire Monkey is known for, the precise scoring that turns a loaf into artwork, with none of the snags or cuts of a traditional blade holder.
Benefits of the UFO lame:
- Ultimate fine control for decorative, artistic scoring
- Ambidextrous design
- Retractable blade stores safely inside, no more cuts for blade holders
- No thumb nuts to snag your dough
- No more lost blades
- The original circular lame, designed and made in the USA
Materials: solid American black walnut and stainless steel hardware. Approximately 46mm (1.8") in diameter and 6.35mm (1/4") thick.

Shop the leather pouchThe idea is great but this product is $5 at best. The quality of wood is poor, the lame itself is tiny and thin, the surface is bumpy and rough. For $30 I’d expect a smooth surface, slightly larger for thumb to fit nicely into the grooves, polish, oil, and wax treatment like other kitchen wood utensils.
It probably costs very little to manufacture using a CNC or similar tooling. Disappointed.
Hi Malwina,
Thanks for taking the time to write this. Before anything else, I want you to know we stand behind our products 100%. The UFO Zero lame carries a full one-year warranty, and since you purchased just a few months ago, you're well within it. Reach out to us at any time and we'll make it right, whether that's help restoring the finish or a replacement. I'd rather solve this than have you left disappointed.
I also wanted to share a little about how these are made, because a few of the things you flagged are actually intentional. The UFO is designed to be small and light on purpose. It's for bakers who like the control of holding a raw blade but still want something safe to grip, so the compact size is the whole point rather than a shortcut. We also deliberately use no chemical finish. The wood is meant to be kept dry and re-oiled now and then to maintain the finish. That care keeps them looking and performing their best for years.
Kind Regards,
Tyler
The only lame I use! Nothing better
The Zero is actually the very first WireMonkey lame I ever got. I had a knock-off before that and I returned it immediately. It's a great lame for scoring the decorative wheat stalks because it replicates pinching a pencil between your fingers. It gives me lots of control. Now what is the safest way to unscrew this? I put the lame at the heel of my hand with all my fingers flared AWAY from the lame and twist. Try it! It works every time and all my fingers are intact.
This is the second lame that I ordered, I ordered my first about 3 years ago when I began scoring designs on my sourdough. I like to have both lames ready asI cut the blades differently when I'm scoring. It's been a great product and works well for me.
I have been using wire monkey bread lames for about 6 years now, and they have long been a favorite. Ergonomically comfortable and beautifully hand crafted, I gift them to any friend starting on a bread journey.
my favorite lames, this is my 2nd wire monkey purchase - I love how light and comfortable it is to use
Love my wire monkey lames!
Love my lamés from Wiremonkey !
Can’t wait to bake. The handcrafted UFO lame is beautiful and truly special.
Exactly as described. High quality with really nice instructions included. On a side note, we had a USPS issue, which was not the seller’s fault, but they helped out tremendously. Highly recommend.
I ordered this as a gift and the recipient was happy with it. They specifically wanted this style of lame. The item seems high quality and just what they were looking for.
Arrived safely and timely. Clear instructions on prep and use. Well made and lovely.
Great customer service, packaging, instructions, high quality product and people. Thank you.
The lame is exactly as pictured, sleek, and functional. I no longer have to worry about sticking my hand into a sharp blade because it tucks away perfectly. After buying one for myself, I’ve purchased two as gifts!
Great product. Just the right siza.
I haven’t gotten a chance to use this yet, but I am very glad I purchased it to maintain the scoring tool I bought form this shop as well!
Repeat customer, excellent shipping and quality product, definitely recommend!
Gorgeous quality! It’s so easy to use and I love that it’s self storing.
Nicely made! Easy to use!
Beautiful lame! The workmanship is amazing! It is smaller and thinner than I thought it would be but it is pretty much the weight of the razor blade, itself, so you have great control over the angle and depth of the slashes. Very happy with this!
Sharp looking and sharp to touch 👌🏻
Great quality and works great!
Love these lames! Had one for 3 years of daily use before needing to replace it. Wonderful maneuverability for scoring all designs!
This is my second order of this item and it arrived in a timely fashion. Quality is the same as my first! Perfect.
The perfect bread lame. Beautifully crafted and well designed.
packaged and shipped promptly--thank you.
well made and packaged and shipped promptly--thank you.
Why did I wait to buy one of these??
So glad that I got this pouch because it just keeps my lame from banging around in the drawer.
Absolutely loved receiving this item. I've already used it several times and am about to purchase another one to add to my collection. Would highly recommend.
Beautiful piece and perfect size!!
